3 Reasons Why There is No Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

January 9, 2011

The best thing since sliced bread is a phrase that gets used far too much. Before today I didn’t really know the true meaning of the phrase, because sliced bread really is that good! For breakfast today I used the leftover (un-sliced) bread from yesterdays meatballs to make some toast. At this point I realised a few things about the brilliance of sliced bread;

  • The risk of injury is reduced, hugely. Using un-sliced bread involves a knife, this is dangerous and many murders get committed each year using knives. Imagine how much this has been reduced by sliced bread.
  • It is actually fairly difficult to slice bread using a knife. It ends up in pieces, not slices, with holes to match the slice of Swiss cheese you are about to put on it.
  • The mess made by slicing bread is quite incredible. Bread crumbs everywhere, and then there’s the knife. It’s only touched some bread, go on put it back in the draw, it’s not really dirty is it? The mess made by sliced bread is far from crumbless but the state of your work surface after slicing bread on it is something else.
Sliced Bread

The iPhone does none of the above, and no matter how many apps you have, it is not the best thing since sliced bread.

Munched today:

11:00- 1 slice of said toast.

13:45- Tuna pasta bake, with 2 flapjack bites and Man U vs Liverpool (not a great game)

15:00- Flapjack bite

18:30- Salt and Vinegar Pringles

19:45- Sunday roast: pork, potatoes, green beans, carrot and cauliflower cheese.

20:30- Cadbury Nibbles (caramel buttons, awesome)

    I cannot think of anything better since sliced bread as well. I agree with all of your points. Crumbs everywhere… and yes I heard it wasn’t a great game (Man U vs Liverpool), but probably more exciting than writing essay like what I did yesterday. *sigh…
    Have a great one. And here to sliced bread… a toast! cheers. 🙂

      That would depend what the essay was on.. but it was a boring game, especially if you missed the first two minutes, and therefore, the only goal!
