The People's Supermarket – The 'Feel Good' Way to Shop?

February 6, 2011

Tonight Channel 4 aired a one hour documentary about the People’s Supermarket. You can watch it here.

What is the People’s Supermarket?

It’s quite an interesting and potentially innovative concept, but the cheap food will come at a price.

The People’s Supermarket is a supermarket to serve the local community with good cheap food that’s fair to consumers and producers. But it will only work if the management can convince the customers to work there for free.

Would You Use It?

Would you use a supermarket that provided good cheap food that gave a fair deal to the local producers of the food BUT meant you had to work there free for 2-4 hours a week?

OR would you still use your favourite Supermarket even if this service was available?

And Finally…

If you have any thoughts about The People’s Supermarket, leave them below. Here are some shared from Twitter (sorry about the blur):

Not too many people making the expected complaints like – ‘not enough range’, ‘trusted big brands’, ‘4 hours too long’, ‘what about my clubcard points?!’

Yes I would do the hours and I do. I’ve been a member at The Peoples Supermarket from the start and I love it. I’m even doing extra shifts as it’s so fun. If you do the maths I’m sure I could earn more than the money I save by getting paid to do those hours elswere but it’s much more than that for it’s members, it’s about doing something good with your time and energy. If anyones interested I’d highly recommend joining, you don’t have to live in the area to be a part of this, many members arn’t .
