What To Eat To Calm Nerves (And Other Non-Foody Tips)

February 17, 2011

Today, after 4 long years of being legible to, I was given legal status to pollute the environment. That’s right, I passed my driving test. I’m going to put a large part of that down to the food (and of course the first-class tuition of Belt Up To Drive Driving School Plymouth).

I did a little bit of research to give myself the best chance of passing, and here is a collection of the best tips I found on the web:

  • The obvious ones about being ready, booking a good test time and doing mock tests. Belt Up had these covered…
  • The other obvious, albeit hardest one – don’t get drunk the night before – even if Arsenal do beat Barcelona 2-1!
  • Get a good nights sleep.
  • Eat lots of carbohydrates –  they have been known to calm down the mind as they release serotonin in the brain (apparently).
  • Don’t tell anyone about your test date – the less people you tell, the less expectation, the less pressure.
  • Eat a banana – helps you focus.
  • Skip the caffeine – which only adds to nervousness, but do drink herbal teas, especially chamomile (apparently).
  • Go for a walk and get some fresh air (a couple of hours before the test).
  • Relax, take deep breaths, think positive and listen to some calming music before the test.

I think all in all, these tips did make a difference – there is a thin line between passing and failing, and that line is a banana!

Here is the food I ate before and after the Test:

09.15 Cheerios and Croissant x2
12.15 Banana
15.30 Lamb Curry and Uncle Ben’s Rice
15.45 Jaffa Cakes x7
19.30 Rare Sirloin Steak with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Mange Tout and Asparagus Tips.
20.05 Trifle and Clementine

And Finally…

Here is my favourite ‘joke for calming nerves tip’ of the week:

‘Swap the chocolate for Sunflower Seeds.’

I’m going to put my neck on the line and say that’s a rubbish, terrible, offensive swap.

I believe the banana was the key element in passing today!

It was subliminal! We bought steak and Laura picked up the mange tout without me noticing. The potatoes had to be on the menu after that!
