Best Before: has it gone past it's sell by date?

April 25, 2011

This isn’t new news, in fact it’s fairly old news now. Nonetheless, it’s not been mentioned on OCN yet.

The news is that the ‘best before date’ may be scrapped in an attempt to reduce food waste. The argument being that people strictly following the date will throw away perfectly good food, regardless if it’s good or bad.

So what will replace it? Guidelines on how to tell if your food is off? People probably need it if they believe a date on a piece of plastic before any personal judgement. Or is it just the man in the white coat syndrome? Where the packet is seen as an authority, which must be followed or you’ll have to face the consequences.

One potential downside could be a lack of perfectly good food being heavily discounted each evening. Although, I’m not sure if that really is too much of a downside – less people fighting in the isles?

Part two to follow tomorrow…

Eaten today:

11:00 – Easter egg
16:00 – More Easter egg
18:30 – Lasagne, garlic bread, salad
