Garlic is essential to so many different dishes all around the world so today’s post is going to give an overview of 5 facts you might not know about those powerful little cloves:

1) VARIETY – Marked by its paper-like skin, there are over 300 varieties of garlic grown worldwide. One of the most common varieties is American garlic, with white, papery skin and strong flavor. Italian and Mexican garlic have a pinkish-purple skin and slightly milder-flavored varieties.

garlic2) SMELLY GARLIC – The smell of garlic can be removed by running your hands under cold water while rubbing a stainless steel object.

3) WONDER DRUG – Garlic has a long history as a herbal wonder drug, used by by monks in the middle ages to cure the plague, by Hippocrates used garlic vapors to treat cervical cancer and it’s still widely used for cold and flu. Garlic can also control acne, suppress the growth of tumors, and is a potent antioxidant good for cardiovascular health. Other studies show garlic can reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol and is a good blood-thinning agent to avoid blood clots that could lead to heart attack or stroke.

4) CALORIES – Garlic contains only 4 calories per clove.

5) STORAGE – For best results, store garlic in a dark, cool, dry location.
