Michelle Obama Hails McDonald's for Healthy Food in America

July 26, 2011

Michelle Obama, who has put cutting child obesity at the heart of her job, has today praised McDonald’s for their plans to add apples to Happy Meals and other new nutritional projects.

Obama’s statement:

“McDonald’s is making continued progress today by providing more fruit and reducing the calories in its Happy Meals.

I’ve always said that everyone has a role to play in making America healthier, and these are positive steps toward the goal of solving the problem of childhood obesity.

McDonald’s has continued to evolve its menu, and I look forward to hearing about the progress of today’s commitments, as well as efforts in the years to come.”

The Associated Press reports:

McDonald’s is adding apples to all its Happy Meals and launching a nutrition-focused mobile phone app as part of a broader health push.

The changes underscore how the restaurant industry is reacting to the demands of customers and regulators who blame it for health ills ranging from childhood obesity to diabetes.

Among other changes in McDonald’s new program:

  • McDonald’s pledged to reduce sugars, saturated fats and calories through “varied portion sizes, reformulations and innovations” by 2020. It didn’t give details. By 2015, it will reduce sodium by 15%.
  • McDonald’s will introduce a mobile app focused on nutrition information.
  • McDonald’s USA president Jan Fields and other executives will go on a “listening tour” in August to hear suggestions from parents and nutrition experts. The chain will also launch an online forum for parents.

McDonald’s says the directives are “absolutely not” related to impending regulations that will force the industry to curb the marketing of junk food to children and post nutrition information on menus.
