You're Paying Too Much for Glass

July 28, 2011

Consider the drink Schloer.

The image this picture immediately conjures up is Pimms. You thought it, I thought it and the advertisers went out of their way to make it look like that. And in doing so they added about £1.50 to the amount you’re now willing to pay for this drink.

It looks like Pimms, which costs £14.79* in Tesco for 700ml. Now consider that Schloer is £2.09* in Tesco for 750ml, it sounds like a bargain, but that’s because you’re comparing it to Pimms. Instead compare it to Tesco Summer Fruits Drink.

This is a drink, in my opinion nicer than Schloer, that I wouldn’t dream of paying £2.09 for despite it having nearly three times the content of Schloer. It is in fact 66p* for two litres.

I guess what I’m trying to say is too often we get swept up in advertising and glass bottles and if we (I) actually stopped to think about it, we’d realise that we’re paying an awful lot of money for packaging…
